Welcome To ChhatWe are a Student InitiativeGet To Know Us

CHHAT meaning shelter is a student initiative by architecture enthusiasts from Vadodara Design Academy that aims to provide comprehensive design-build strategies and help give back to the community. Our sustainable practices are aimed to provide architecture that adds value to the lives of people.

A student initiative to learn, explore and experiment towards sustainable human habitats.

About Bamboo
WHY BAMBOO

Being low carbon, eco-friendly and sustainable in nature, the perception about this native material has been suppressed by the modern materials in terms of its structural or constructional essence and its potentials.

With the constant changes in our society and environment, we have transformed and expanded our typologies of functional and spatial requirement. To overcome the issues, these ideas and innovative solutions of adaptive models have to become reality and pave the performance in the battlefield. This is being done through prototypes and experiments carried out at the campus by the students and within the community.

Bamboo in Building
  • Bamboo has good engineering properties and it is feasible substitute for other materials for housing and construction sector.
  • Bamboo has high tensile strength, very good strength to weight ratio. It can be easily worked upon by simple tools.
  • It can resist forces created by high velocity wind and earthquake.
  • Bamboo and components made of bamboo are environment friendly, energy efficient and cost effective.
Ideology of Chhat

OUR APPROACH

Evolve by Introspecting

PHILOSOPHY

CHHAT is a student organization which seeks to address the challenges of shelter requirements through simple design solutions.

STRATEGY

Our capacity building program consists of a comprehensive teaching – learning environment that involves people from diverse backgrounds.

VISION

To create modules that are versatile, deployable and capable of regeneration, serving large masses of people facing challenges of shelter requirement.

INSIGHT

Learning form the local context and traditional building techniques, binds our work to the ground reality which is different than just imagining.

Our Process

our developing process

Learning through explorations

  • 1

    Plan

    Research & Fieldwork

Our research and Field work involves the process of study-analyze, make model prototypes and mock ups, testing through the lab and practicing in reality. The symbiotic relationship established between theory and practice strengthens the idea of design – build concept which varies according to context, program, construction and climate.

  • 2

    Design

    Developing a Strategy

We intend to implement our motive through capacity building programme where students guided by professors and practitioners, work in collaboration with locals to understand their requirements and resolve to a solution that are flexible and adaptive. Thus leading to the passing of knowledge and experience to a wider spectrum.

  • 3

    Build

    Deploying the Shelter

The structures are strategically designed by providing deployable module which are easy to erect and knockdown; saving time and energy through the choice of available local materials such as bamboo.

  • 4

    Support

    Providing Practical Solutions

The solutions provided varies according to people, place and time which can emerge into any physical and spatial forms and has the capacity to regenerate and rearrange to any scale or function responding to the diversity and complexity of the needs.
